A national forum on coral reef restoration in Indonesia has identified several priorities to strengthen restoration efforts nationwide, including establishing a Coral Stock Center, streamlining licensing procedures, and improving access to sustainable financing. Held on 8-10 September 2026 and hosted by Coral Triangle Center (CTC), the National Forum on Coral Reef Restoration brought together approximately…
In Maluku, coral reefs face heavy pressures from the climate crisis and destructive fishing practices like bombing and poisoning. Local communities have taken various actions to restore them using diverse methods, but many of these efforts often happen in isolation without proper documentation or shared learning. To bridge this gap, Coral Triangle Center (CTC) and…
Coral reef restoration is rarely a straightforward path. Storms, bleaching events, disease outbreaks, and human pressures continue to challenge the health of marine ecosystems across the Coral Triangle. Yet beneath the turquoise waters off Nusa Lembongan, something remarkable is happening. Where degraded coral rubble once covered the seafloor, new coral fragments are thriving, growing centimeter…
From March 27–29, CTC in collaboration with local partners and supported by the Oceanic Society, successfully installed 100 Reef Stars in its coral restoration demonstration site in Toyapakeh on the western side of the Nusa Penida MPA. Since 2024, CTC and its partners have installed a total of 909 Reef Stars in this restoration site,…
Together with Quicksilver Pontoon, local stakeholders, and volunteers, CTC successfully carried out 300 Reef Star installations in the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA) from February 10 to 13, 2026. The event, held at Quicksilver Pontoon, was attended by 121 participants. Participants were involved in all stages of the Reef Star (RS) installation process, from…
In early May 2025, Coral Triangle Center (CTC) and its partners took another significant step in restoring coral reefs within the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA). Over four days in Toya Pakeh and Ped, the team successfully installed 200 Reef Stars and planted more than 3,000 coral fragments—an expansion of the Coral Reef…
Situated off the southeast coast of Bali, the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area (MPA) spans 20,057 hectares and includes the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan. Over the years, the coral reefs along the northern coast of Nusa Penida have suffered significant damage due to irresponsible marine tourism, diseases, coral bleaching, tropical…
Coral reefs are a lifeline for nearly a billion people, providing food security, livelihoods, and coastal protection. However, the escalating frequency of marine heatwaves is causing widespread coral die-offs, threatening marine biodiversity and the communities that depend on these ecosystems. While traditional conservation strategies focus on protecting reefs with lower thermal exposure, they often fail…
As home to 41% of the world’s climate-resilient coral reefs, Indonesia plays a crucial role in global marine conservation. To enhance conservation efforts and improve stakeholder engagement, two key meetings were held in Bogor: a Communications Strategy Development Workshop for the GEF-7 Coral Reef Refuge (CRR) National Hub, from February 18–20, and the MPA Vision…
