Staff Development Week 2025: CTC at the Frontlines of Change
On July 16-18, 2025, Coral Triangle Center (CTC) held its annual Staff Development Week with the inspiring theme “CTC at the Frontlines of Change.” Bringing together our dedicated teams from Indonesia and Timor-Leste, the event took place at the CTC Center for Marine Conservation in Sanur, Bali. It was more than just a week of training, it was a time to reconnect, reflect, and strengthen our collaboration across divisions as we continue to advance our mission for ocean conservation.
Throughout the program, participants engaged in a wide range of sessions designed to sharpen skills, spark creativity, and build a stronger sense of unity. Each division had the opportunity to present their progress and highlight areas for improvement, allowing us to celebrate achievements while identifying ways to grow together. This spirit of openness and reflection set the tone for the week, encouraging every team member to see how their individual contributions tie into CTC’s broader vision.
The sessions were enriched by insights from a number of inspiring facilitators and guest speakers. A workshop on core values by Bart van Haltere of MDF reminded us of the principles that guide our work and how they shape the culture we build together. Storytelling training with Imam Mulyadi, also from MDF, gave staff new tools to share our conservation journey more effectively with diverse audiences. Gender Equality and Social Inclusion was another key focus, led by Titiek Kartika Hendrastiti, who helped us explore how inclusivity strengthens both our workplace and the communities we serve.
Alongside these reflections, practical skills were also emphasized. Bayu Wardoyo from Divers Alert Network provided vital knowledge on dive safety, ensuring our field activities continue to uphold the highest standards. Tom West of Juicebox led a thought-provoking session on the ethical use of AI, a timely topic as technology becomes increasingly integrated into conservation work. To balance learning with creativity, the week concluded with a resin art workshop by Kultara and a museum tour at UC Silver, giving staff space to recharge, bond, and find inspiration in art and culture.
Staff Development Week 2025 was made possible thanks to the passion of our team and the generosity of our collaborators and guest speakers. As we move forward, we carry with us renewed energy, stronger connections, and a shared commitment to stand at the frontlines of change for our oceans and communities.
