Strengthening CTC Staff Capacity in Scientific Writing and Presentation

On July 6 and 7, 2026, CTC held a two-day “Scientific Writing and Presenting” workshop aimed to strengthen staff capacity to write and communicate scientific knowledge clearly, concisely, and effectively, while building skills in developing international peer-reviewed research papers and delivering scientific presentations in a standardized format.

Led by CTC’s Conservation Science Coordinator, Dr. Sonja Kleinertz, the workshop used a participatory and hands-on approach. Ten CTC staff from Bali, Jakarta, Maluku, and Timor-Leste explored key aspects of scientific writing, including paper structure, the scientific process, plagiarism, submission strategies, and peer-review processes. The second part of the workshop focused on presentation skills, covering audiences, planning and structure, delivery, time management, managing nerves, and responding to questions. Participants applied the learning directly to their own abstracts, papers, and presentations, receiving direct feedback from the mentor and peers throughout the process.

“There is mostly nothing more satisfying than teaching interested students in a certain topic to enhance their future knowledge and support their potential,” said Dr. Sonja.

The practical sessions allowed participants to revise their documents and presentations based on examples, transparent mentor feedback, and clear evaluation criteria. They also discussed reviewer comments and questions, practiced communicating key research findings within time limits, and received guidance on tailoring scientific messages to different audiences.

One of the participants, Kasman, CTC’s Training and MPA Program Support Specialist, shared, “The Science Writing and Presenting workshop clarified the requirements for scientific writing in a global context, making it easier for me to produce the necessary scientific texts. Furthermore, the presentation practice highlighted the key points needed to clearly convey our research to an audience, even within limited time constraints. This practice also boosted my confidence in delivering presentations in English.”

The workshop contributed to CTC’s strategic objective of strengthening organizational capacity in scientific communication and developing scientific papers as organizational knowledge assets. By combining practical exercises, peer learning, and individual mentoring, the training supported staff to improve their skills and confidence in writing scientific documents, responding to reviewer feedback, and presenting research to specific audiences. Follow-up post-coaching will remain available to support participants in further improving their abstracts, papers, and presentations.
