Building Local Capacity for Coral Reef Restoration in Labuan Bajo

Seven participants from Yayasan Ekosistem Bumi Lestari (YEBL) and Tacik Conservation strengthened their knowledge and hands-on skills in coral reef restoration during a three-day training led by Coral Triangle Center (CTC) in Desa Lenteng, Labuan Bajo.
Held from June 12 to 14, 2026, in conjunction with World Ocean Day, the training aimed to build the capacity of YEBL’s local partners to independently plan and implement coral reef restoration using the Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System (MARRS). As a partner of Mars Sustainable Solutions (MSS), CTC delivered the program based on MSS’s standardized training modules while providing technical expertise through classroom learning and field-based practice.

The training combined presentations, discussions, group work, simulations, and in-water exercises to give participants a comprehensive understanding of coral reef restoration. Across six learning modules, participants explored coral biology, herbivorous fish and reef ecology, site selection, restoration program planning, restoration methods, and post-restoration monitoring and maintenance.
Beyond the classroom, CTC facilitators guided participants through every stage of the restoration process. Participants learned how to identify suitable restoration sites, assess reef conditions, construct Reef Star structures, collect and tie coral fragments, and install Reef Stars underwater. They also practiced designing restoration programs tailored to local conditions, helping translate technical knowledge into practical conservation planning.

The training concluded with discussions on monitoring and maintenance approaches that community groups can apply to support the long-term success of restoration efforts. Participants also completed post-training assessments to measure their understanding and practical skills.
Despite budget constraints limiting the training to two completed Reef Stars and one unfinished structure—fewer than the ideal number needed to demonstrate larger-scale installations—the participants remained actively engaged throughout the program. The hands-on exercises and discussions enabled them to build confidence in key restoration techniques while deepening their understanding of effective reef restoration planning.

By combining scientific knowledge with practical field experience, CTC continues to empower local organizations with the skills and confidence needed to lead sustainable, community-driven coral reef restoration efforts across Indonesia.
