CTC Promotes Ocean Stewardship Among Youth in Haruku

On June 30, 2026, Coral Triangle Center (CTC) participated in Haruku Sameth GPM Congregation Kids and Youth Gathering, delivering a presentation on “Youth Awareness for the Environment and the Ocean”. The session engaged approximately 140 youth participants and mentors from the Haruku and Sameth communities, encouraging young people to become active stewards of their coastal and marine environment.
Strengthening awareness among young people is an important step toward long-term conservation of the Lease Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA). Through an interactive presentation and question-and-answer session, CTC highlighted the crucial role youth can play in promoting sustainable behaviors, educating their peers and families, and participating in community-led environmental initiatives.

The session introduced participants to the ecological importance of coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds, emphasizing their role in supporting marine biodiversity, fisheries, and local livelihoods. Participants also learned about key threats to marine ecosystems, including plastic pollution and destructive fishing practices, while exploring simple actions they can take to help protect the ocean in their daily lives.

The participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the session and demonstrated a strong understanding of the topics presented during the interactive question-and-answer session. By fostering ocean stewardship from an early age, CTC continues to strengthen community awareness and inspire the next generation to contribute to the conservation of Maluku’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
